Regional 2012 Sports Volunteer Coordination

The regional sports volunteering project aims to deliver a lasting legacy for sports volunteering, using the 2012 Games as an inspiration for the work. Volunteering is one of five central themes which underpin all 2012 activity in the West Midlands and which will help maximise the opportunities London 2012 provides for the region.
The project runs from 2008-2011 and includes work to:
- Support and building stronger and more effective sports partnerships
- Promote the benefits and opportunities of sports volunteering and working with partners to increase sports volunteering participation
- Identify and signpost organisations and partners to additional funding resources
- Share and promote good practice.
The project also encourages the effective roll-out of the Personal Best programme across the region.
It will encourage the adoption of volunteering quality standards and will also track the increase in volunteers and volunteering opportunities in the region prior to 2012.
The project’s success is measured against key performance indicators.
How the regional sports volunteering project works
Funded by Advantage West Midlands and Sport England, the project is led by a management group made up of representatives from both funders, the county sports partnerships, National governing bodies for sport forum, England Volunteering Development Council, NAVCA, GOWM, RegenWM and RAWM staff.
During 2008/9 a project strategy and action plan were written, following consultation with the sports and third sectors. With approval from management group, this is used to direct project activity.
RAWM developed the successful bid for this project which was the first of its kind in the UK. As accountable body, RAWM is responsible for the delivery of the project and works closely with the project management group.
Working with other volunteering agencies
Regional Sports Volunteering Project works with other regional volunteering stakeholders such as the England Volunteering Development Council for the West Midlands to ensure a coordinated approach to volunteering in the region.
